KASARGOD: Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said here on Monday that as many as 13 Chengara families who were rehabilitated in Periya would be given alternative lands to facilitate the setting up of the Central University of Kerala.Inaugurating the pattaya mela here, the minister said the CU authorities had demanded a total of 500 acres of land in Periya to set up the university and the allied institutions, but there were only 310 acres of land in Peria and 13 acres of land were given to the Chengara families for their rehabilitation.The minister stated that the development projects allotted to the district would not be allowed to lapse for lack of land. He said if the construction of the building for the Central University was not started within three years, the government would retract the land. The minister said that the Chengara families would be resettled on the land which would be agreeable to them. The minister distributed pattayam to as many as 1,500 families and 500 more families would be given pattayam within a week. Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan presided over the function.
