Korba: Four persons, including a Janpad Panchayat member, were arrested for allegedly molesting a teenaged girl at a government-run hostel in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.
President of Pali janpad panchayat Ganraj Singh Kanwar, is also among five men who have been booked in this connection but is absconding after the incident came to light, police said.
The incident took place on Tuesday when the five men Kanwar, Pali janpad panchayat vice-president Ajay Jaiswal, a Congress MLA's representatives Ganesh Das Mahant, R P Kanwar and Dinesh Rathore went to the girls' hostel in absence of its superintendent Manjulata Uike, for inspection, Katghora Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDPO) Sanjay Mahadeva said.
According to the complaint, upon reaching the spot, Kanwar called up Uike, who was out of town for some official work, saying that they want to inspect the hostel, to which she asked them not to enter the hostel premises.
Overlooking the superintendent's request, the accused barged into the hostel, threatening the woman guard, he said. "The victim was molested by public representatives and his aides while visiting the hostel. When she began crying, the accused threatened her and even tried to lure her with a Rs 100 note asking her not to reveal the incident," the officer said.
Later when Uike returned, the inmates informed about the incident following which they lodged a complaint last evening, he said, adding, the four accused were arrested yesterday.
"Kanwar is absconding since the incident came to light while four others have been arrested," he said. A case has been lodged under IPC Section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and other relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act against the five persons, the SDPO said, adding, efforts were on to nab Kanwar.
