Srinagar: There is massive pressure being built on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Jammu and Kashmir after multiple incidents of protests in the state.
Facing the challenge to maintain the law and order situation in the state, BJP's new state-in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir Avinash Rai has said that strict action will be taken against such demonstrators.
"We are concerned with this development. We won't let this happen again. We will take strict action. There are some people who do not want peace in the state. State government is serious in curbing such incident," Rai said.
Protests led by Hurriyat were held in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir including Anantnag and Srinagar after the Eid prayers on Saturday. Pakistani flags were also raised during the protests. There are no reports of injuries so far due to the protests.
A group of men started pelting stones at police and paramilitary forces in Eidgah area of the city soon after the Eid prayers concluded, a police officer said. He said the trouble-makers were chased away by the personnel of the law enforcing agencies.
Similar incidents of stone-pelting were also witnessed in Kothibagh area of the city but the police managed to restore order by chasing them away, the officer said. A group of around 50 youth indulged in stone-pelting at Lal Chowk in Anantnag area of south Kashmir but were chased away by the police, he added.
The protests are being held even as Hurriyat Conference has announced that it will attend the Eid Milan at Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on July 21.
Meanwhile, tension between India and Pakistan has hit another the Eid tradition of sending sweets to each other. After repeated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, the traditional exchange of sweets between the Indian and Pakistani forces at the Attari-Wagah border on Eid has been called off.
