Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday highlighted the importance of the Indian Constitution, drafted by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, at the inauguration ceremony of Constitution Temples at the 434 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in Maharashtra.

Speaking at the ceremony at the Elphinstone Technical School and Junior College, Dhankhar stated that this initiative will play a significant role in raising awareness about the Indian Constitution. The event was attended virtually by several dignitaries, including Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister of Social Justice Ramdas Athawale. Additionally, Dhankhar’s wife, Dr. Sudesh, was present at the event. Minister of Skill Development Mangal Prabhat Lodha and other senior officials from the Skill Development Department were also in attendance.

Dhankhar said, “The essence of Indian culture is enshrined in our Constitution. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s significant contribution in drafting this Constitution is commendable. The Constitution is a guiding force for the nation, and it is essential for the younger generation to comprehend its core principles. Dr. Ambedkar’s lifelong efforts for the upliftment of the marginalised stand as a testament to his dedication. Initiatives like the Constitution Temples will help in spreading his vision and the importance of social justice among the youth.”

He also remarked that India, as the world’s largest democracy, thrives on unity in diversity, and this is largely due to the strength of the Indian Constitution. Dhankhar expressed pride in India’s democratic identity, stressing the importance of respecting and understanding the Constitution, especially for the younger generation.

Radhakrishnan praised the Skill Development Department for launching such innovative initiatives and recalled the historic significance of the Elphinstone Technical School, where Dr. Ambedkar received part of his education between 1904 and 1907. He also lauded ongoing programmes such as the Chief Minister’s Youth Work Training Scheme, which aims to reduce unemployment by equipping the youth with essential skills.

Athawale called the Constitution a symbol of secularism and unity, urging students to actively participate in the Constitution Temple initiative. Lodha echoed these sentiments, expressing joy at the inauguration on the occasion of International Day of Democracy. He noted that the temples would help instill the ideals of Dr. Ambedkar in future generations.
