MEENANGADI: CPM activists organised a march to the controversial land of M V Shreyamskumar MLA at Krishnagiri village in the Sulthan Bathery taluk, near here, on Monday. The march was in protest against the lethargy of the UDF government in taking over the land as per the directive of the High Court. The party workers symbolically seized the land putting up party flags and banner in the land, sneaking through the police cordon.
CPM state committee member P A Muhammed inaugurated the public meeting organised in connection with the protest march, here, in the morning. A large posse of police headed by DySP P D Sasi blocked the march few meters away from the controversial land on the NH 212 towards 11.30 am. Though there was a minor scuffle between the police and agitators, the leaders intervened and the workers started a sitin agitation on the road which lasted for an hour.
Inaugurating the sitin Vidyadharankani, state secretary of Adivasi Kshema Samithi (AKS) said that Shreyamskumar failed to produce any evidence in the High Court supporting the claims he raised earlier. "We will continue the agitation and cannot be deterred by any force including the police," he added. He also said that the AKS has been raising the issue for more than a decade. "The hapless tribal community has no land of their own even to bury the dead," he added. As the sitin was on, a group of workers sneaked through the cordon and entered the land, raising the flag and banner on AKS and CPM. The police later removed the flag and banner from the land on direction from Subcollector Hari Kishore.Despite much provocation from the workers at the beginning, the police maintained a steady restrain. It is to be recalled that the High Court had given a verdict recently denying the plea of M V Shreyamskumar MLA for granting 'patta' for the 16 acre coffee plantation.Shreyamskumar had bagged a stay order in his favour from the HC against the 'take over'move.
