New Delhi: The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Thursday filed its chargesheet in the murder case of Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, son of late politician ND Tiwari. Rohit’s wife, Apoorva, has been charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to murder.
The 518-page chargesheet, along with the photographs, was submitted before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat. The court will take cognizance on Friday.
The police have also recovered an important video from Rohit’s phone where he is heard saying that his wife had threatened him and she could even kill him. The police have taken the video into their custody as well.
According to sources, the chargesheet has 56 witnesses, including Rohit's mother Ujjwala Tiwari as well as statements of the investigating officers. The case mostly relies on the circumstantial evidence against Apoorva, who had murdered Rohit on the intervening night of April 15-16.
A senior police officer privy to the investigation said that Apoorva had smothered Rohit with the help of a pillow. The victim was reportedly unable to fight back as he was under the influence of liquor.
The chargesheet contains statements of all the inmates of the house as well as those of other witnesses. All the residents have stated that both Rohit and Apoorva were staying in separate houses and the former had left the abode immediately after their marriage. They also said that the marriage was on the rocks and the couple had approached lawyers and sent notices, sources said.
After coming back from voting in Uttarakhand, Rohit ate dinner around 11 pm and then retired to his room. The CCTV footage, which the police have submitted as part of the evidence, shows Apoorva going to Rohit’s room at around 12.45 am.
According to a Crime Branch official, Apoorva’s changing statement put her into trouble. In the statement to local police, she said she was with Rohit from 11 pm till 3 am. She changed her statement again during inquest proceedings.
By the time the case was transferred to the Crime Branch, the post-mortem report had already come. It mentioned that Rohit died within two hours of having dinner, somewhere near 1 am, as his dinner was not digested.
When the Crime Branch approached Apoorva for her statement, she changed the timing of her stay in Rohit’s room. She said she came out of his room by 1 am while in earlier statements she mentioned that she was in his room till 3 am.
Apoorva also went to Rohit’s room next day to collect her charger, which means she saw him bleeding through the nose but didn’t raise an alarm, said the police officer.
In her confessional statement later, she admitted to having killed Rohit, but also maintained it was not a planned murder. It was in a fit of rage.
What triggered her anger was seeing Rohit and his sister-in-law, on the video call, in the same car while returning from Uttarakhand and having a drink from the same glass.
After retiring to the room, Apoorva again had an argument with Rohit where she asked why he and his sister-in-law were in the same car. According to the police, she was not in favour of their relationship. She used to accused Rohit of having an illicit relationship with his sister-in-law.
