BANGALORE: Unsatisfactory garbage management and lack of public amenities have been the daily scenario in some parts of the city. Radhakrishna Temple Ward is one such area which has probably been suffering the most. The residents of Radhakrishna Temple Ward have been asking the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to take measures in providing the basic civic amenities. Their main grouse is the negligence of the BBMP authorities in clearing the garbage on a regular basis.Radhakrishna Temple Ward consists of Lottegollahalli, Venkatachary Nagar, HIG North, RMV Second Stage, Dollar Apartment, Krishna Layout, Amarjyothi Layout, Raja Mahal Vilas 2nd Stage third block, Naidu Layout, Judicial Colony, AECS Layout, Jaladarshini Layout and Geddalahalli. The residents of Lottegollahalli complain that the pourakarmikas visit the area once in a month and do nothing to clear the garbage. “We have no other option other than dumping the garbage near the railway track. We have even complained to the Corporator but nothing has been done to ensure that the pourakarmikas do their job properly,’’ says B Dhanalakshmi, a resident of Gandhi School Road. The BBMP had taken up various development works in the ward this year but the people are not happy with the quality of work done. Many have complained about the substandard work of pavements at Venkatachary Nagar. “The quality of work done is very bad. The pavement slabs have been laid as per the whims and fancies of the contractor. No mesh is provided for the storm water drain holes. Can the BBMP authorities inspect the work and take action against the contractor for sub-standard work?’’ asks Shekhar of Venkatachary Nagar. The water leak on second cross, Lottegollahalli is a classic example of the authorities’ concerned. “Water is being supplied on alternate days for one hour. No one seems to be bothered about the wastage of water due to a leak for the last 15 days. If the authorities take measures to plug the leakage, water can be saved,’’ says S Raghu, a resident. However, D Venkatesha, Corporator contradicts the residents by saying that he had tried his best to provide civic amenities in all areas in Radhakrishna Temple Ward. Venkatesha mentions, “Development works at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore were taken up last year. I have taken up many open drain and footpath development works at various localities in the ward last year. As far as complaints about the sub-standard work is concerned, all the precautions were taken to ensure quality in development works. A few people have complained to me about the poor quality of work at Venkatachary Nagar. I have instructed the executive engineer of the BBMP to inspect the development work.”The BBMP had allocated Rs 2 crore for development works this year. “The focus will be on maintenance of park and strengthening storm water drains,’’ says the corporator. On the shortage of water at Lottegollahalli, the corporator adds that the BBMP had sanctioned eight borewells to mitigate the water woes. He further adds, “Among the eight borewells, four failed to yield water.”He concludes saying that efforts will be made to clear the garbage on daily basis as soon as the BBMP recruits some civic employees.
