CHENNAI: A 19-year-old engineering student was found dead under mysterious circumstances on his college hostel premises at Ambattur on Sunday. Police said that the cause of death was still unknown and that the organs of the student had been sent for tests to the forensic lab.Police said P Saravanan (19) of JR Nagar, Sholingur, a second year Mechanical Engineering student in a private college at Surapet, Ambattur, was staying in the hostel on the college premises. Saravanan’s father Ponnurangan was a headmaster in a government school in Sholingur, police said.On Sunday morning, Saravanan had gone to the toilet in the hostel around 10 am and did not return to his room. Fellow students, who thought that he might have gone out as it was weekend, tried to call him on his mobile phone but the student allegedly left his phone in silent mode. Around seven in the evening, students searched the toilets and found one of them locked from inside.They scaled the wall of the toilet and got inside through the gap between the wall and the roof,only to find Saravanan unconscious inside. They took him to Kilpauk Medical Hospital where he was declared dead. Police sources said that the post mortem, which was done in KMC, was videographed as the cause of death was unknown. The doctor who conducted the autopsy had also visited the spot where the student was found unconscious.The college declared holiday on Monday as college sources said he teenager, who was a bright student, had been ill for sometime. But, police said that the student looked well built and healthy. “The boy does not have any external injury or signs of broken bones. So, his organs have been sent for tests and we will know the cause of death only after we get the results. Also there was no evidence of him consuming poison,” said a police official.
