Incidents of human-wildlife conflict have long been reported in Pilibhit district. Over the past one year, more than half a dozen villagers have lost their lives in tiger attacks in villages adjacent to the Mala range of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. According to reports, officials noticed similarities in all these attacks, leading to speculation that the same tiger was responsible for these continuous incidents.

On September 9, a tiger attacked a farmer while he was chasing monkeys away from his field in the Banskhera area of Pilibhit. Efforts to capture the tiger intensified after the farmer’s death, and it was finally rescued on September 23. The tiger has been kept in a safe-house in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve for monitoring and medical examination.

Not reacting to noises

As per the available information, the tiger, which has killed more than half a dozen people, is not responding even to loud noises. The tiger only reacts when visually stimulated. This has led to suspicions that this tiger may be deaf. It is believed that constant exposure to the noise of firecrackers, horns and other loud sounds used by villagers to scare away wild animals could be the cause. Physically, the tiger is completely healthy and does not have any injuries.

Providing more details, Manish Singh, Deputy Director of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, stated that after the tiger was rescued, it was kept under monitoring and medical examination. While the tiger is in good health, it is not reacting to sound. There is a suspicion that it might be unable to hear. A report on the matter has been prepared and sent to the higher authorities , and further instructions are awaited.
