Firing across LoC: Is Pak provoking India?
Firing across LoC: Is Pak provoking India?
Terrorists could target J-K ahead of polls, says defence analyst Praveen Swami.

An Army jawan was killed on Monday as Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions in Nowgam sector at around 1530 hrs IST, Kupwara district near the Line of Control (LoC) Jammu and Kashmir.

In the retaliatory firing by the Indian side, four Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Is there a connection between the suicide attack at the Indian Embassy in Kabul, cease-fire violations at the LoC and the serial bomb blasts in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad?

Defence analyst and Associate Editor of The Hindu Praveen Swami explained that they all seemed to be linked.

“I think there is no doubt about it. There are elements in Pakistani army establishments who an escalation as being in their interests. A lot of what's being happening at the Line of Control is intended to provoke a massive Indian retaliation. Mercifully that hasn't happened but presumably it is to create conditions so that the Pakistan Army could then pull out of the commitments in the North West Frontier Province and tell the Americans that we can't deal with this because the Indians are misbehaving. It is calibrated and well thought of strategy. Whether this strategy has the support of the bulk of Pakistani establishment is another question,” Swami said.

With elections in Jammu and Kashmir scheduled to take place soon, will terror related activities rise?

Swami pointed out infiltration has been rising and terrorists could target the state ahead of the polls. “Absolutely. We have already seen heightened infiltration already and I suspect as inevitably infiltration hots up we will see troops on both sides trade fire more often. It is very, very disturbing as the keystone of India-Pakistan relations has been the ceasefire and if it falls apart then there is no telling where it might end,” he said.
