The state government has decided to compensate over 23.2 lakh farmers for crop loss owing to the prevailing drought situation in the state.
The drought had cost the exchequer over Rs 323 crore.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday after chairing a Cabinet Sub-committee on drought situation, Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister K S Eshwarappa said that the government would issue an order on payment of crop loss compensation to the farmers in a day or two.
He said that the farmers who had sustained crop loss in rainfed areas would get Rs 1,000 per acre.
“Compensation for the yield loss of seasonal horticulture crops grown under irrigated conditions would be `2,000 per acre”he said.
According to Eshwarappa, the state government had appealed to the Union government to provide a financial assistance of Rs 3,609 crore for the year 2011-12 and another Rs 14,489 crore in August this year.
However,the state government had received only about Rs 352 crore so far, he added.
“The Congress leaders in the state should take up the matter with the Union government and help to release more funds to tackle drought conditions,” he said.
He also informed about the decision of the state government to take the services of over 700 engineers to combat the scarcity conditions on an outsourcing basis.
“There are also plans to take the services of the technocrats and data entry operators on a temporary basis,” he said.
