Excitement in the air was palpable at many city schools, as students prepared to entertain their teachers on the occasion of Teacher’s Day on September 5. Dances, skits, poetry readings and piano recitals were on the agenda, with groups of children practising to give the best performance they could.
The day is one of celebration, where students attend school as usual, but there are other activities to show their gratitude and affection for their teachers.
Shalini D, a student of class XI in a prominent city school, said that she and her friends were singing a song based on their class teacher’s favourite genre of music. “She likes country music, so we are going to sing Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver,” she said, adding that other students were dancing to the latest pop songs or cine music.
In other schools, teachers were the ones preparing to take the stage. Monica Chandran, a teacher at a private school, said, “It is supposed to be a day for us to relax but we are also going to have fun by putting up a show for our students. It gives them such a thrill to watch us in a different avatar.”
She added that on November 14 Childrens Day, it would be their turn to watch the students display their talents.
