Hisar: One person was killed and several others were injured as members belonging to the Jat community clashed with police near Ramayan village in Hisar on Tuesday. The incident took place when members of the community were protesting against police for detaining top Jat leaders and rounding up agitators squatting near the railway track at Ramayan village late on Monday night.
Hisar District Commissioner has called in the Army to restore order following violence by Jat groups.
The community has been holding protests for the last few weeks demanding OBC quota in government jobs and educational institutes.
When police personnel tried to disperse the mob using tear gas shells and water canons, the protesters retaliated by pelting stones, forcing officials to resort to lathi charge and firing shots in the air.
One person was killed and several others were injured in the ensuing melee, officials said.
While police denied the youth had died as a result of police firing, agitating Jats claimed he was killed after the personnel opened fire.
The victim was identified as Sandeep, 22, of Mayyar village, officials said, adding his body has been sent for post-mortem.
The injured were admitted to the civil hospitals in Hansi and Hisar and the seriously injured have been referred to PGIMS at Rohtak.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Ramayan village and its surrounding areas. Last year too, one agitator had died during the Jat stir in Hisar.
Traffic on the Hisar-Delhi road has been diverted to other routes as a precautionary measure, officials said, adding heavy police force supported by Rapid Action Force and CRPF was guarding the railway track near Ramayan railway station.
Rail traffic on Hisar-Bhiwani track continued to remain disrupted for the 17th day as railway authorities suspended some trains as a precautionary measure.
