Incessant rains claim 2 lives in Surat
Over 2,000 people have been evacuated from Surat and Vadodara as heavy rains flooded low lying areas there.

Vadodara/Surat: Two persons, including a two-year-old child died as incessant rains lashed Surat on Thursday, officials said.

A child died when his house collapsed over him at Adajan area in Surat, while a man drowned at Pasadora village in the district.

Besides, over 2,000 people have been evacuated from Surat and Vadodara as heavy rains flooded low lying areas there.

"Nearly 1.6 lakh cusecs water has been released from Ukai dam on river Tapi after its level reached 337 feet," Surat district collector A J Shah said, adding hundreds of people who have been shifted to safer places would be allowed to come back after water recedes.

In Vadodara district, Vishwamitri river flowing through the city has reached the danger level of 213 feet, officials said.

Over 1500 people from six villages in Vadodra and Waghodia taluka have been shifted to safer places, they said.

Vadodra received nearly 200mm rainfall in the last 36 hours.

The weather department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall at almost all places of Gujarat on Friday.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours.

Ahmedabad city too experienced heavy rainfall in the morning causing water logging in many low lying areas.

The rains subsided later in the day giving respite to the people.
