KOCHI: The Indira Gandhi Snake Boat Race is all set to make a come back, and, if the officials are to be believed, the now-defunct boat race, which had generated equal amount of enthusiasm as that of the Nehru Trophy Boat, could be held in October. A meeting between government officials and representatives of various cultural organisation, held here on Saturday, took the decision to reintroduce the event, which was discontinued after the Kochi Lake became unnavigable. The meeting, which was presided over by Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas, conducted detailed discussions on various phases of the event. “The government’s priority is to identify developmental projects and this initiative is one among them,” he said. District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, who is also the chairman of the District Tourism Promotion Council, said that steps would be taken to provide support for such a venture. The officials expect that once it gets started, the race can regain its popularity. Efforts will be made to clean the lake with a dredge, they said. The authorities said that if they could arrange a better track they would also be able conduct competitions in Chundan, Iruttukuthi ( A and B grades) and Veppu, Nadan and Odi categories.
