KOCHI: The play ‘Irakal’ lit a spark in the minds of the audience and spurred them to stand up and fight for their rights in a world of injustice and exploitation. ‘Irakal’ was presented at the Maharaja’s College auditorium as part of the UGC-sponsored 10-day theatre workshop ‘Naadaka kalari’ held from May 27 to June 5.The play which portrays the sufferings of women has been directed by Sasidharan Naduvil. ‘Irakal’ is based on ‘Pulappedi’ by N S Madhavan, ‘Rishi’ by Anand, and ‘Panthamenthiya Pennungal’ a drama by Civic Chandran.Rahana Mansoor, a student of English Department, Maharajas College, also the daughter of Cochin Masoor played the lead. The others in the cast include Limsha, Shinol, Sarika, Sharanya, Safvan K Bava, Vaisakh, Afsal, Jayakumar, Noyal, Abinesh, Ajith and Sharath Sasi. The music was directed by Jino and Sarasij. The play pictured the life of women exposed to all kinds of cruelty, and also Manipuri women who fought against the selfish, cruel ruling class.Prof C R Omanakkuttan was the chief guest of the valedictory function. Principal Prof M S Vishvambharan, script writer John Paul, UGC cell coordinator Dr N Shaji and camp coordinator Prof Sumi Joy Oliyappuram spoke.
