Italian court summons 22 CIA agents
Milan court has issued arrest warrant against 22 CIA agents suspected of kidnapping an Egyptian cleric from Milan in 2003.

Milan: An Italian court on Friday issued a Europe-wide arrest warrant against 22 CIA agents accused of kidnapping an Egyptian cleric from Milan.

Milan magistrates suspect a CIA team grabbed Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr from a Milan street and flew him for interrogation to Egypt, where he said he was tortured.

Prosecutors have demanded that the Italian Justice Ministry seek the extradition of these CIA agents from the US.

But Justice Minister Roberto Castelli of the Italian court has not yet decided whether to act on the request.

The warrants were approved by the European Union four years ago after the 9/11 attacks and are valid across the 25-nation EU bloc and does not the require approval of any government.

The case is one of several investigations into whether US intelligence agents used Europe to illegally transfer militant suspects to third countries for interrogation.

The renditions have led to tensions between Washington and the European Union.
