ROURKELA: The AS Naidu Commission, probing the alleged assault of a judicial officer by an IIC, begun hearing here on Friday. Three witnesses deposed before the Commission on the day.Niranjal Samal, an employee of the Rexon Strip Ltd, explained how he was tortured at Chandiposh police station for lodging a complaint against a habitually errant police inspector. Another witness Arindam Dutta narrated events highlighting ‘police excesses’. CITU leader Biman Maity also recorded his statement. Rourkela Bar Association president Ramesh Bal, senior lawyer MD Parija and lawyer Suranjan Panda, who were present at Uditnagar police station, would depose before the Commission, on Saturday. The single-member Commission will hold regular sittings till Sunday. On April 2 night, the then Uditnagar IIC SN Pujari allegedly slapped JMFC AK Patnaik while the latter was on phone in front of his official residence. Patnaik was later taken to the police station. Two complaints were lodged at Uditnagar police station by the IIC and the JMFC. Lawyers had launched a stir against the police and the SP over the issue.
