KHAMMAM: Farmers led by Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham and the CPI laid siege the collector’s office for three hours here on Monday, demanding immediate redressal of their grievances.Hundreds of farmers took out a rally in the town and laid siege the collector’s office.Vehicular traffic came to grinding halt on Wyra road due to the rally.Addressing the agitators, CPI central committee member and former MLC P Nageswara Rao said the state government had failed in addressing farmers’ problems.Citing the example of withdrawal of subsidy on fertilizers, he said with the decision of the government, farmers were unable to continue cultivation.Lack of minimum support price to paddy and increase in other crop inputs have made farmers in the district declare a crop holiday, he pointed out. The CPI leader demanded the government pay `10,000 per acre as compensation to the farmers who declared a crop holiday this kharif season.He also demanded that the government must consider paying `2,000 as pension to each farmer above 50 years old.Later, the Rythu Sangham and CPI leaders submitted a memorandum to district revenue officer.Kothagudem MLA K Sambasiva Rao, party leaders TV Chowdary, B Hemantha Rao, M Tirumala Rao and M Hanumantha Rao were also present.
