KOCHI: Road accidents due to rash and negligent driving claim hundreds of lives every year in Kochi. And this year is no different, with accident statistics for the first six months of 2011 showing that the most number of accidents reported in the state happen in Kochi. The statistics were provided by the Kerala Police in its website. Though the Police had taken strict measures to keep a check on rash driving, the surge in the number of accidents remains a major threat to the commuters.According to the data provided by the Police, a total of 983 accident cases were reported in the city limits in the period between January 1 to June 30 this year. Among these, 96 persons lost their lives. The report also says that 950 of these accidents occurred due to rash driving. Surprisingly, a majority of these accidents happened during day time.The rash driving of the private buses resulted in 127 accident cases that were reported in the first six months of 2011. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were involved in 43 accidents, two wheelers in 654, cars in 347 and lorries in 107 cases that occurred in the city.Meanwhile, the total number of accident cases reported in the city in the year 2010 was 1779 resulting in loss of 166 lives. But this year, the accident deaths reported in the first half itself have reached nearly 100, which is higher than the previous years.Under the Ernakulam Rural area, a total of 1712 accident cases were reported in the first six months of 2011, out of which a total of 171 persons lost their lives. Meanwhile, the total number of accidents reported in the rural area in the year 2010 was 3967 in which 318 deaths were reported.Experts say that strict enforcement of rules pertaining to parking, speeding, rash and negligent driving and drunken driving will curb this problem to a great extent. The indiscipline of motorists and the bad roads are also cited as major reasons for the rise in the accident rate.
