Kovai lawyer attack case goes to CB-CID

CHENNAI: The Madras HC has ordered the transfer of the case of attack on Coimbatore-based advocate Anandeeswaran to the CB CID for effective investigation.An order to this effect was passed by the first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam following the contention raised by TN Advocates Association president S Prabakaran that the local police were not conducting the probe on the proper lines.After considering the facts of the case and perusing the counter affidavit filed by the Coimbatore Police Superintendent and the additional affidavit filed today, the bench observed that ‘‘we deem it appropriate to transfer the case to the CB CID, who shall investigate the matter independently, impartially and without being influenced by any of the police authorities and then submit a report within four weeks. The investigation shall be conducted by an officer at the level of SP, CB CID,’’ the bench added.The bench also directed the government to pay a compensation of `1 lakh to the injured advocate. ‘‘We have gone through all the materials produced before us, which prima facie show that the lawyer got injured and he was hospitalised and continued to be under treatment.’’
