CHENNAI: While being the shopping paradise of the city, T Nagar has had its own share of problems – the most obvious being the burgeoning traffic congestion. That’s also one of the reasons why it is top priority for the constituency’s MLA, VP Kalairajan, who has promised to put an end to the traffic woes.Despite flyovers constructed across the commercial area of T Nagar, it has helped little in regulating traffic, and the MLA blames it on the lack of proper planning before construction. “I will form an expert committee and get inputs from the local associations before proceeding. These suggestions will be submitted to the chief minister,” he said. Parking issues, in and around the shopping area, will also be addressed and appropriate steps will be taken, he added.Besides the mounting traffic issues, Kalairajan listed out his other priorities — education and maintenance of law and order. “More children from the slums will be encouraged to go to school and more facilities will be extended to government schools in the area. This will be the next step on my agenda,” he said. Funds will be allocated to provide better infrastructure, including new buildings for government schools. “I will provide better infrastructure in schools from the funds allocated to my constituency and will also provide the basic amenities required here,” he added.Of all his promises, one that might pose a big challenge is maintaining law and order. For instance, in Ashok Nagar, there have been incidents of older people being murdered at home. Residents of the area had barely any confidence in the police or the previous government. Is Kalairajan confident of preventing such fatalities? He seems to think so.  “Many old people were targeted for valuables and others. Police have to be vigilant. People are positive that our CM will do something to change this situation and those who are working should become confident of leaving their elders at home,” the MLA said.Claiming to have faced obstacles to develop his area during his previous term as the  MLA (as the state was ruled by a different party), Kalairajan is sure he can bring a change and solve these plaguing issues. “I tried for the expansion of the TNagar bus stand and the cleaning of the storm water drain but nothing materialised in the previous government,” he recalled.Routing to solve these issues, the MLA also welcomed complaints from the public.
