Hyderabad: Blocking websites carrying offensive content cannot be a solution, and rather a regulatory mechanism should be put in place to remove such material, a cyber security expert said here today.
Ankit Fadia, a computer security expert and author, found fault with the idea of some colleges, offices and government organisations blocking some websites, and said putting in place a regulatory mechanism would be a better solution.
"Banning or blocking websites is not the answer and is a step away from democracy and could silence free speech altogether. We need to find a middle ground which allows a more efficient mechanism to remove offensive content from the internet without blocking access to websites," he told reporters here.
Observing that there are many positive aspects to the social networking sites, Fadia cited the examples of aid pouring in for the Haiti earthquake victims and Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption being helped by such sites in a big way.
Some of the social networking sites have emerged as gateways to information and news as many famous personalities express their views on them, he said.
