Mobile phones, SIM cards seized from Kalapet prison

It was led by  Superintendents of Police S Ramaraj, T Bairavasamy and G B Pazhanivel. A total of 40 policemen and 30 wardens were involved in the surprise check.The search was held as part of the efforts to contain smuggling of mobile phones into the jail, Shukla added.In addition to the cell phones and SIM cards, a mobile charger and battery was also seized from the jail complex during the surprise check.The involvement of prison inmates in many recent murders and extortion threats has brought into focus the issue of smuggling of mobile phones inside the jail.The police department has already written to the government to install more jammers on the jail premises to check the smuggling of mobiles phones into the jail.Meanwhile, a complaint has been registered with the Kalapet police and further investigation is on.first published:September 20, 2012, 10:41 ISTlast updated:September 20, 2012, 10:41 IST
