Hyderabad: A Hyderabad court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of former Bollywood starlet and underworld don Abu Salem's companion Monica Bedi as she failed to fulfill the legal formalities necessary for her release.
Monica was required to produce the original passport documents in the court on Thursday. But she said she had lost her passport five years ago. This means Monica's stay at the Hyderabad prison will be longer now.
Monica's father Prem Kumar Bedi, who arrived in Hyderabad from Norway on Thursday to complete the formalities for her bail, said he will move the Supreme Court on Friday to get it clarified whether she can be released with an affidavit saying she had lost her passport.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court, which had earlier sentenced the former starlet to three years' imprisonment, is likely to order her release once her father completes the formalities.
Though a Bhopal court absolved her earlier this in the fake passport case after the police had failed to produce adequate witnesses against her, Bedi faces similar charges in Hyderabad.
Officials, who accompanied Bedi, said she was in high spirits. "She is happy as she has been acquitted of all charges in Bhopal," AS Ansari of the Madhya Pradesh Police said.
Earlier, Monica, a non-descript actress who had worked in few films before being caught up in this controversy involving her and Salem, had said she wanted to return to Bollywood. Bedi and Abu Salem were extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005.
