THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The states will be ensured of more flexibility than before in the implementation of Central Governmentsponsored schemes, said Mihir Shah, Member, Planning Commission, while addressing a press meet here on Monday.
He said that 20 percent of the total funds for various central schemes would be given to states such as Kerala and NorthEastern states as flexi funds. "Under such a move, the states will have more control in the utilisation of money. The states can use the money the best way it should be used. The outcome will however be monitored by the Central Government. The priorities can be determined by the states,' he said.

He said that the government would cut the total number of Centrallysponsored schemes from 250 to 50 .

Talking about reforms to be introduced in National Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes (NREGS), Shah said that the scheme would undergo major changes in the near future.

He also stressed the need for a system for estimating the demand for jobs. At present work opens in a place when NREGS is launched.

Shah said that NREGS would be modified in such a manner as to restore work in farms.
