Mumbai: Anger turned to amazement for 90-year-old Savitri Desai when her son Ravi came to Chinchpokli railway station to take her back home yesterday. Although she was apprehensive of going back home out of fear of harassment by the family members, she relented after her son's assurance of proper behaviour. "I am glad to be with my family and I am grateful to all the commuters who took care of me for three months," said Savitri.

Following MiD DAY's report ('Discarded by kin, 90-yr-old lives on railway platform', Feb 27) underlining the neglect by Savitri's family members towards her, Ravi felt impelled to take his mother home. " It's good to have the entire family back together under one roof. I am thankful to all those people who extended a helping hand to my mother," said Ravi.

Help for Savitri had started pouring in since last morning at the MiD DAY office. A caller, who wanted to remain anonymous, said, "I wish to help Savitri. If necessary I am ready to take personal care of her for the rest of her lifetime."

Meanwhile, Rajesh Soni (31), an accountant working at Lalbaug, who was instrumental in highlighting Savitri's plight and who take care of her along with other commuters, made it a point to visit Savitri once she was back home.

"When I first saw Savitri two months back at the platform I felt pity for her. This motivated me to feed her and take care of her on a daily basis. She used to bless me everyday and now that she is back home with her family, I feel my efforts to help her have been successful," said Soni.
