Mumbai: The Students and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Thursday protested the release of Bollywood film 'Madras Cafe'. There have been calls for a ban on the movie in other parts of the country including Chennai. The allegations is that the movie hurts the sentiments of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Meanwhile, the release of the Tamil version of 'Madras Cafe' is likely to get delayed in Tamil Nadu as the Madras High Court has asked the makers of the film to not release their venture without getting permission from the Film Certification Board.

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film stars John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles, while Rashi Khanna is also playing a pivotal character in the film.

The trailers of the film suggest that it deals with the issues of Tamils' plight in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, director Shoojit Sircar had said that his movie 'Madras Cafe', based on the Sri Lankan civil war, may have certain scenes resembling events related to Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, but it's not a biopic on the former prime minister.

At a press conference, Sircar and the film's producer John Abraham were asked if permission was sought from the Congress party to essay an important sequence in 'Madras Cafe' on lines similar to the Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

Sircar said: "This is not a biopic on him, this is not a story based on him. Yes, you can say that there is a similarity to that incident. There is a similarity in the facial structure (of the actor who plays the said role)."
