Odd-even scheme could be extended by a week till January 22: Delhi government tells HC
The Delhi High Court was hearing a petition on whether the odd-even scheme should be stopped or not.

New Delhi: If the Delhi government has its way, the odd-even car rationing scheme could be extended by another week until January 22. During the hearing on a petition on whether the odd-even scheme should be stopped or not, the Aam Aadmi Party-led government said that the formula has curbed the pollution levels in Delhi.

Defending the need for the scheme to be in place for at least 15 days, the Delhi government said, "there is a need to implement it for 15 days. In winters, the pollution is anyway high as wind speed is low. The formula has been able to stop pollution-levels from further going up. The odd-even is just a start."

The Delhi High Court on Thursday questioned the time duration for the odd and even car number scheme asking the state government why the plan is being implemented for 15 days and not one week.

The High Court had observed that one week is also enough for the plan and does not need to be extended to 15 days. It has also asked the government to ease restrictions.

Also elaborating its plans, the Delhi government told the court about how intends to bring down the pollution levels. "We have short, mid and long term plans to curb pollution. For the long term, Delhi government is contemplating elevated roads, Euro VI fuel, among others," the government said.
