But this time, the police who often in the past acted fast against the racing youngsters by arresting four youngsters who were engaged in a ‘death race’ on the busy Vellayambalam-Kawdiar stretch.  Arun and Anees of Manacaud, Regan of Veli and Sanjay of Nemom, all in their early twenties ,were apprehended by Museum police at around 12.30 pm on Wednesday. According to police, the youths who were engaged in racing were apprehended after a person telephoned the police control room and informed the matter. The police team intercepted the racing youth and took them to custody. The youths were later released on station bail.  However, the police were soon caught in a fix as certain youth organisations and a some members of the public criticised the police move to grant station bail to the arrested. They alleged that the police often took a soft stand on such crimes for monetary benefits.  They also said that the police charged the youths who posed threat to the lives of people, under a mild section. Earlier, various youth organisations including DYFI had directly intervened against the racing craze among affluent youths in the city.
