Chennai/Trivandrum: Heavy rains lashed coastal Tamil Nadu and south Kerala on Thursday. At least four people have died due to rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu.
Kanyakumari and Nagercoil are the worst-hit districts in Tamil Nadu. Officials have said trees have been uprooted across the state and over 400 mobile towers have been damaged.
The rains are expected to continue for the next 12 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a cyclone Ockhi warning for Lakshadweep Islands.
An NDRF team with over 60 members is on the way to Kanyakumari while another 45 NDRF men will be sent to Lakshadweep if needed. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea and move to safer places.
In Kerala, the Met department has predicted heavy rainfall and winds across southern parts of the state. Trivandrum, Kollam, Alappuzha are likely to be most affected by cyclone Ockhi.
Met department sources said the present position of Ockhi is around 70 km south west of Kanyakumari. Ockhi is expected to move in the west–north-west direction towards Lakshadweep.
The regional weather office on Thursday said a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal will bring heavy rains. The system lay centered at around 500 km south-south east of Kanyakumari.

Squally winds reaching 45-55 kmph was very likely along and off South Tamil Nadu during the next 48 hours, and the sea would be rough. “Fishermen are advised not to venture” into the sea for their vocation, the release added.
