With an eye on next year’s elections, the Karnataka government has decided to spend a whopping Rs 1,738 crore on the upgradation of arterial roads in all cities (other than Bangalore) and towns in the state.
The state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar here on Thursday gave administrative approval to the proposal. While 80 per cent of the funds would be spent on roads, the remaining 20 per cent would be utilised for the construction and improvement of drainages.
The works, worth Rs 1,390 crore, would be taken up immediately, said Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister S sureshkumar, who briefed the media on the Cabinet decisions.
Twenty-one corporations and city municipal councils (CMCs) located at district headquarters will get Rs 30 crore each, while 23 CMCs located outside district headquarters will get `15 crore each.
Ninetty-four city municipal councils will be given Rs 5 crore each.
Similarly, 49 town panchayats located at taluk headquarters would get Rs 5 crore each and 24 outside taluk headquarters would be granted `2 crore each. “These works would be completed in three years,” Kumar said. The Cabinet has given its nod to build 11 new bridges.
