CHENNAI: The State Bank of India, NRI Branch in association with the State Bank Retired and Serving Employees Forum (SBRSEF) — A forum for social cause, organised a drawing competition and an essay writing competition for under-privileged girl students studying in South Chennai Corporation Schools recently. About 90 students from 20 Schools (17 corporation schools and three government schools) participated in the events. The students wrote essays on six national leaders -- Mahatma Gandhi, Babu Rajendra Prasad, Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Dr Radhakrishnan and Mahakavi Bharathiar.The themes selected for the drawing competition were based on environmental abuse such as accumulation of plastic garbage on the streets, burning of tyres, bursting crackers on the streets and polluting the atmosphere. The themes also included the steps taken for improving the environment like planting and growing trees, economic measures such as rain water harvesting and much more.The prize distribution ceremony was held on the day of the event itself. The assessment was based on the overall performance of students. The first place was shared by two Chennai Corporation Higher Secondary Schools, in Virugambakkam and Puliyur (Kodambakkam). While the second prize was won by Lady Willington Higher secondary School, Triplicane, the third position was secured by Corporation High School, Canal Bank Road, Mandaveli. Every student was given a pencil box inclusive of a pen and pencil, a water bottle, an umbrella and a school bag.While SBRSEF gave away the umbrellas and school bags, SBI provided the students with water bottles and pencil boxes.Prizes were distributed by NR Sampath, Former Chief General Manager, SBI, who was also the Chief Guest, along with CR Sekar, the most valuable NRI customer of the Bank. K Raveenthiran, AGM, NRI Branch, Ranganathan, AGM, SBI and R Mohanakrishnan, Secretary, SBRSEF were also present on the occasion.
