VELLORE/TIRUVANNAMALAI: Grama sabhas were held in villages across Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. According to official sources,  sabhas were held in all the 860 villages in Tiruvannamalai. Tiruvannamalai district collector Anshul Misra who participated in the grama sabha at Ayyampalayampudur village on the occasion of Republic Day, urged villages to maintain all the 31 registers pertaining to each village panchayat. In Vellore district, Collector Ajay Yadav chaired a grama sabha at Konda Samudhram village in Gudiyattam block on Thursday.In Tiruvannamalai, Misra explained the official process of selecting beneficiaries for the various schemes being implemented. He pointed out that grama sabhas provided a platform for villagers and officials to interact and must be utilised by villagers to air their suggestions, opinions, grievances and requirements besides getting to know the various schemes and programmes being implemented by the government. Giving details about some of the recently introduced schemes such as the chief minister’s new medical insurance scheme, revival of the integrated women sanitary complexes (IWSC), the new marriage assistance scheme and pudhu vazhvu thittam, the collector encouraged village residents to put the schemes to good use. He pointed out that women and children should utilise the IWSCs while SHGs must volunteer to maintain these centres. He also asked the Village Health Committee to monitor these activities.Responding to some of the pleas made by the women who had assembled, Misra said that the building of individual toilets, provision of better drinking water facilities and more street lighting will be implemented through the village panchayat. Adequate funds have been allotted for all villages, he added. Complimenting the implementation of the pudhu vazhvu thittam in many of the villages in the district, the collector said that it was gratifying that the villages have involved themselves in the project. The villages should make use of the loan facilities extended by the pudhu vazhvu thittam to improve their living conditions. Earlier, the collector participated in a special camp organised to screen beneficiaries for the chief minister’s new medical insurance camp at Tyagi Annamalai Pillai Government Higher Secondary School in Tiruvannamalai. District revenue officer Valarmathi chaired the grama sabha held at Karuthuvampadi.In Vellore, where around 753 villages held Grama Sabhas, Ajay Yadav stressed on the importance of avoiding open defecation and using the integrated women sanitary complexes. He pointed out that the district administration has allocated funds for green houses in the villages. He also handed over an assistance package of `30 lakh under the pudhu vazhvu thittam, old age pension scheme and educational loans.
