New Delhi: Among all the terror talk and business banter than dominated day one of SAARC Summit on Tuesday, there was also a proposal of making SAARC relations something on the lines of European Union.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said SAARC must become a Union and adopt a single currency for achieving its political and economic pursuits.
He said adopting single currency will enhance the productivity of the region, improve trade without barriers and dissolve to a great extent major differences in language, culture, religion and income levels.
"I am particularly concerned that SAARC has not realised its enormous potential yet," he said, citing EU as an example and stressing the need to move away from "fancy rhetoric”.
On terrorism, Rajapakse said the March 26 air attack at Katunayake by the LTTE must attract the attention of SAARC leaders to the fact that South Asia was not safe from “barbaric terrorist groups."
Rajapaksa said the SAARC countries must work jointly on a counter terrorism strategy for the entire region.
