CHENNAI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be arriving in Chennai on Sunday evening for his two-day visit to the state amid tight security.The flight is expected to land at 6.45 p.m and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will receive him. Singh is likely to spend 30 minutes at the airport, meeting various dignitaries, including leaders of various political parties.Later, he will proceed to Raj Bhavan, where he will be staying overnight. He will be meeting the organisers of the functions to be held in Chennai and Karaikudi at the Raj Bhavan.He is planning to attend a function at the Madras University centenary building the following day after which he would head to Karaikudi.Over 7,000 police personnel, including the central forces, have been deployed for security for the Prime Minister’s programme in the city.In Tiruchy, security has been strengthened at the airport, where he will be landing to take a helicopter to Karaikudi. Besides the Special Protection Group (SPG), city police would guard the Tiruchy airport in view of the black flag demonstration announced by the DMDK.Top officials of the Special Protection Group had visited the city to oversee the security arrangements at the airport. The Prime Minister will return to Tiruchy airport and take a flight to New Delhi on the same day.Meanwhile, the DMDK local leaders urged the party workers to gather in front of the Tiruchy airport with black flags to show their opposition to the Prime Minister to condemn the “partial attitude” of the Centre against Tamil Nadu in the Mullaiperiyar dam issue. DMK president M Karunanidhi has announced that he will be meeting the Prime Minister on Monday and submitting a memorandum demanding the increase of storage level in Mullaiperiyar dam to 142 feet and to take immediate steps to stop the attacks on Tamils on border areas in both States.
