THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bachelor of Mass Communication and Video Production (BVMC) students of Mar Ivanios College here have decided to channel their creativity for a cause. The students are planning to launch a trust, exclusively devoted to producing short films with noble messages. The trust, named ‘Sadgamaya’, will come up with short films which will address socially relevant issues and spread awareness against social evils. The trust aims at raising funds for sponsoring poor children suffering from various ailments and also for giving financial support to poor students. ‘‘This is a wonderful initiative from our students. The entire activities of the trust will be monitored by the teachers,’’ college principal K M Francis said. The activities of the trust will be coordinated with various schools in the city. The films will be screened in schools across the city. School children will be distributed receipt books and at the end of every week, each student can donate a particular sum for the activities of the trust. The students can take these receipt books to their locales to collect money from the public. As a prelude to the activities of the trust, the students will celebrate this Onam with the inmates of a charity home based in Nalanchira. The students have already drummed up funds for the celebration. ‘’We will have our Onam sadya with the charity home inmates. This will mark the beginning of the activities of the trust. Also, we are planning to raise a sum to sponsor a financially backward student who is good at studies as part of the initiatives of the trust,’’ says Arun A R, a first-year BVMC student. The students have already brought out their first film in the series. ‘Daivathinte Noolpavakal’, a film on cancer, will be screened in city schools. The contributions from all schools will be collected and donated to the Regional Cancer Centre for helping the children admitted to the Paediatric wing of RCC. The next film of the trust will be on the evil effects of alcohol consumption. All the films will be produced with the funds raised by the students. Though this is an initiative of BVMC students, students from other departments of the college will also be active participants in the proceedings of the trust. ‘’As new batches come, the trust will be passed over to them. This is just a beginning. We have already planned topics on which we can produce short films. Shooting of our next film will begin within two months,’’ says Arun.
