Bengaluru: A 44-year-old man on Monday allegedly attempted suicide in Vidhana Souda, the legislature building in Bengaluru. The man, identified as R Revanna Kumar, was found with his wrist and throat cut in the bathroom located on the third floor of the building.
He was rushed to the Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital in the city where he is currently undergoing treatment.
A bundle of papers that Kumar may have carried with him was found beside him, along with a suicide note. Kumar hails from Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka.
Kumar is said to have attempted suicide after his request to make his temporary librarian job permanent was not heard. The suicide note, allegedly written by him, said, "The government is responsible for my death. For more than three years now, there has been no hike in salary to ensure minimum wages. How does one live? I have written multiple times to Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, President, Prime Minister, Director of the department, but there is no use. Death is the last resort. I hope 6,000 families (of librarians like me) get justice."
Kumar also stated that his final rites must be done by the chief minister.
"This is not a suicide (sacrifice). This is the last phase of my fight," he added in the note written on a letterhead of the Gram Panchayat Library Supervisors Welfare Association. Kumar was working in the library in Chintamani taluk in Chikkaballapur.
D Devaraja, DCP, Bengaluru Central, said Kumar entered the building between 1 pm and 1.30 pm. "He worked as a librarian in Chikkaballapur. We have got documents related to his job appointment," he said. "We are investigating about him having slit the throat with a blade, knife or some other sharp object. We do not know yet the purpose of his visit or who he was to meet here. He is out of danger."
Criticising the government, BJP leader and former minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said the administration had failed to disburse the minimum wages. Kumar had sent a copy of the letter to Poojary, who is also the opposition leader in the legislative council.
"Their salary is Rs 13,200. It was the government which announced it. The government promised this three years ago, but has not disbursed it yet. Is this how they give justice to the poor? The government must give out the salaries for all 6000 of them within 24 hours," he said.
