Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, a former scriptwriter, held centrestage at a star-studded fete of the Tamil film fraternity.

Karunanidhi, who took to politics after his long stint in filmdom, sat through the function at the sprawling Nehru Stadium in Chennai and received tributes from all sections of the industry on Saturday evening.

He was presented with a silver throne and a pen-shaped scepter at the function with Maharashtra Governor SM Krishna as the chief guest.

Members of the film fraternity presented a series of songs and dances, extolling the DMK leader's past contributions and continuing assistance to Tamil cinema.

Among the highlights of the evening were remixes of the once highly popular songs penned by him.

Apart from several film personalities, the titans of the Tamil screen — Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan — were also present at the function.

Among the younger stars who lent their sheen to the show, were Vikram, Vijay, Sundar C, and Dhanush.

Conspicuously absent was Sarath Kumar, recently elected President of the Film Actors' Association. He had quit the DMK and had campaigned for J Jayalalitha's AIADMK in the last state Assembly elections.

His wife Radhika Sarathkumar, a leading television personality, however, attended the event.

Vijayakanth, former president of the association who launched the DMDK to oppose both DMK and AIADMK in the elections, also stayed away.

Other absentees included newly wed actors Suriya and Jothika who are honeymooning in Europe.
