KOCHI: Negligent and rash driving, overtaking from the wrong side, driving without proper documents and overload-traffic offence in the city are on a rise, say reports. In a vehicle inspection conducted by the Motor Vehicles Department a considerable number of cases ranging from driving without a valid licence to tax evasion were booked in one night. “Nearly 20 motorists were booked in the city in one night for driving without licence in an inspection conducted by the department. Most of the cases were major offences while others include improper use of headlight, tail light for vehicles and improper brakes,” said Ernakulam Road Transport Officer C J Thomas. Youngsters top the list of offenders as a good percentage of the two-wheeler accidents are caused by them. Over speed, violation of signals and rash driving are the most common offences among young motorists. “It’s true that the majority of them now use helmet. But at the same time their reckless driving results in accidents,” he said. He said that along with strict monitoring there should be proper awareness among the motorists too. The city has its share of habitual offenders too. They are people who are booked and pay the fine on a regular basis. Many of the traffic violators think they can get away with payment of fine. “Since our system has not been completely computerised it takes times to track the history. Once we have all the details in an electronic form it will be easier for us. All the records will be easily accessible from the database,” he said.
