CHENNAI: The prices of vegetables and base commodities are expected to go up in the city from Saturday — a fallout of the lorry strike.Prices would go up as transportation of vegetables from the neighbouring States has been affected, said Koyambedu Market Merchants’ Association secretary S Chandran.“Though the market is normal today, we are expecting a decrease of 50 per cent of the vegetable supply from Saturday,” he said.Vegetables like carrots, beans, beetroot and potato come to Koyambedu from Karnataka, while tomato, beans and brinjal are transported from Andhra Pradesh. Onion comes from Karnataka and Maharashtra, while ginger is from Kerala.
