New Delhi: The World Wide Web is growing fast and furious.
In just 15 years since the day the first website went online in August 1991, the Internet space has blossomed to serve more than 100 million websites this month.
Internet monitoring company Netcraft, which has explored the Internet since 1995, said there were now 101,435,253 websites online, up from 97.9 million last month. The first Netcraft survey, conducted in August 1995, had listed 18,957 sites.
The first website that went online in August 1991 had provided a description of the World Wide Web as well as technical support details. When the research firm calculated that in October, the tally had reached nearly 98 million sites, and entering November, the number jumped to just over 101 million.
"The 100-million site milestone caps an extraordinary year in which the Internet has already added 27.4 million sites, easily topping the previous full-year growth record of 17 million from 2005," Netcraft said. The figures were derived from the number of responses to Netcraft's monthly survey, it said.
Netcraft attributes this mushrooming growth of websites to the services being offered by Google and Microsoft, which allow users to get their own domain names for free.
"This has had a tremendous impact on the huge incline of new sites over the past months," the survey says. New online stores and the explosion of blogs too have helped www reach the new milestone so fast, it said.
According to a study by Technorati, a company that tracks blog activity, more than 175,000 new blogs are created around the world every day; in other words, about two new blogs are hitting the Net every second, everyday.
Since the concept that eventually evolved to the Internet was created more than 30 years ago, the number of sites online reached 50 million up to 2004. It took just two years to double that number.
