Monsoon 2024: Monsoon Care Tips For Cats
To ensure your cat stays healthy during the monsoon season, here are a few useful care tips

The monsoon season has started, and while you might be enjoying the cool drizzles, your cat might not feel the same way. While the cool weather and raindrops may delight you, your cat might experience the opposite. The constant rain brings dampness, and the loud noises from thunder and flashes of lightning can be very unsettling, especially for cats, who are often scared of thunderstorms. The increased humidity and wet conditions, combined with unclean environments and reduced physical activity, can make your cat more susceptible to health issues such as respiratory infections, skin problems, and digestive disorders during this season.

To ensure your cat stays healthy during the monsoon season, here are a few useful care tips by Dr Bhoomika R, Veterinary Product Executive, Drools Pet Food Pvt Ltd:

  1. Create a safe spaceSet up a cosy, dry area where your cat can retreat during thunderstorms. A quiet, comfortable spot with their favourite blanket and toys can help them feel secure. You can use a covered cat bed or a cardboard box lined with soft bedding to create a den-like environment. Ensure that the shelter is waterproof, well insulated, and elevated above ground level. Consider placing the safe space in a room that is away from windows and walls to reduce dampness.
  2. Comfort during StormsDuring thunderstorms, try to stay calm and offer comfort to your cat. Soft music or white noise can help mask the sound of thunder, making them feel more at ease. Consider using pheromone diffusers or sprays that can help reduce anxiety. If your cat is extremely fearful, consult your vet about possible anxiety treatments or calming supplements.
  3. Fur CareAfter your cat comes in from outside, thoroughly dry them with a towel to prevent dampness, which can lead to skin issues. Regularly check their paws and fur for any signs of moisture. Brush their fur daily to prevent matting. Regularly check for parasites like fleas and ticks. Giving them a bath with a gentle shampoo and using a dryer on a low setting can also help, but be sure to avoid high heat and keep the dryer at a safe distance from their skin.
  4. Diet and HydrationProvide a balanced diet to boost their immune system. Wet food can add extra moisture to their diet, which is beneficial during humid weather, but make sure it’s fresh to avoid spoilage. Ensure their water bowl is always filled with clean, fresh water. Adding probiotic supplements can help maintain their digestive health, improves skin and coat health, regulates metabolism and boosts immunity. Avoid feeding them human food, which can upset their stomach.
  5. Exercise and Mental StimulationWhile the rains might limit outdoor activities, it is crucial to engage your cat in appropriate exercise and mental stimulation. Engaging in indoor play sessions, interactive toys, and puzzle games will help keep their minds sharp and prevent behavioural issues caused by boredom.
  6. Monitor Their HealthKeep an eye out for any signs of respiratory infections or skin problems. Symptoms like sneezing, coughing, or skin irritation should be addressed promptly with a visit to the vet. Regularly groom your cat to check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or skin issues. If your cat shows signs of discomfort or unusual behaviour, consult your vet immediately.
