Ameen Sayani, All India Radio's popular host, has passed away. He was 91 years old.

It is a sad day for radio listeners as Ameen Sayani has passed away. The radio jockey, best known to host Geetmala on All India Radio (AIR), died on Tuesday night, February 20. Ameen Sayani was 91. The news of his death was confirmed by his son, Rajil Sayani. Speaking with The Indian Express, Rajil said he suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night after which he was rushed to the HN Reliance Hospital, Mumbai.

“The doctors at the hospital attended him but couldn’t save him and he was declared dead,” he told the publication. It is reported that the funeral will take place on Thursday as a few relatives are expected to reach Mumbai on Wednesday.

Ameen Sayani was a renowned radio host. His iconic opening line, “Namaskar bhaiyon aur behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon,” continues to echo in the ears of those who have been listening to radio since the 1950s. Ameen would often host shows featuring music.

He became a household name when he started hosting Binaca Geetmala. The 30-minute show was started in 1952 and became an instant hit. While the show was renamed a few times, including Hit Parade and Cibaca Geetmala, the title ‘Geetmala’ remained synonymous to him.

Following the news of his death, many radio listeners took to X (previously known as Twitter) to express their heartbreak over his death. “The demise of #AmeenSayani marks the end of an era in Indian broadcasting,” read a post. “Rest in joy, Ameen bhai. Thank you for the sweet music and the lovely memories of Binaca Geetmala,” added another.
