Amitabh Bachchan has finally opened up about playing the role of Ashwatthama in Nag Ashwin’s upcoming directorial Kalki 2898 AD, co-starring Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani. During the film’s pre-release event in Mumbai on Wednesday, actor Rana Daggubati asked Amitabh to share his first reaction when he was offered the role of Ashwatthama.

“When Nag Ashwin came and explained his idea to me, for the long time after he left I was thinking, ‘what the hell is Nagi drinking?'” Amitabh said, leaving Rana and his other co-stars in splits. Amitabh continued, “To see something like this which is absolutely outrageous, some of the visuals that you have seen are unbelievable. To have somebody conceive a project which is so futuristic and possible… and during the making of the film you realise that no matter what he thought of he actually brought all the material, all the effects, every kind of vision that he had to the screen and that’s been really amazing. For me to be just a part of it, has been an experience I’ll never forget.”

The trailer for Kalki 2898 AD was released recently, surpassing expectations. It suggests a futuristic take on the Mahabharat. The story begins in Kaashi, a land rich in resources, ruled by Saswata Chatterjee’s character, who demands complete loyalty. A prophecy reveals a child will overthrow him, and this child is carried by Deepika Padukone’s character. To protect his reign, the king puts a bounty on her head.

Prabhas’ character, Bhairava, a top hunter, believes it’s his destiny to capture her. Whereas, Amitabh’s Ashwatthama aims to protect her. The trailer ends with an intense glimpse of Kamal Haasan’s character, leaving fans excited.

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan bought the first ticket of Kalki 2898 AD during the movie’s pre-release event. Kalki 2898 AD producer C. Aswani Dutt handed over the ticket to Amitabh on stage.

Kalki 2898 AD is set to release on June 27, 2024.
