Andrew Garfield found a clever and humorous way to fill the absence of his co-star Florence Pugh at the BFI London Film Festival. When Pugh couldn’t attend the premiere of their film We Live in Time on Thursday, October 17, Garfield made sure she was still part of the event—by bringing along a life-sized cardboard cutout of the actress.
In a lighthearted gesture, Garfield posed on the red carpet with the cutout, which depicted Pugh in the same sheer black Dior ensemble she wore for a previous screening of the film. The cutout featured Pugh standing with one leg crossed over the other, rocking a dotted sheer skirt with a black bra and lace top. Garfield playfully posed with the cardboard version of his co-star, making it clear that the actress, despite her physical absence, was very much part of the celebration.
For his own ensemble, Garfield opted for a quirky paisley-patterned shirt and scarf, paired with a sharp blue suit, adding a playful touch to the event at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Garfield didn’t stop with the red carpet either—he even brought the cutout on stage during the film’s discussion.

We Live in Time features Garfield and Pugh as a couple facing a major challenge in their relationship when Pugh’s character is diagnosed with cancer. While the film delves into emotional territory, Garfield shared lighthearted stories about their on-set chemistry.
Garfield admitted that he was “nervous” about meeting Pugh initially, explaining that building trust took time. “I think we were both really scared and nervous because it takes a while to get to know someone,” he told People. He described himself as “quite shy and quite protective” but said that once he saw Pugh’s playful side, they quickly bonded.
“I could see that I could trust her, that she wanted to have fun,” Garfield said, adding, “that is like catnip to me.” Their connection on set grew stronger, and Garfield revealed that he often “took the piss out of her,” which she enjoyed. The duo’s chemistry, both on and off the screen, has quickly become a highlight for fans eagerly awaiting the film.
