Popular K-pop group BLACKPINK singer, Jisoo is stepping into a new role in the upcoming zombie drama, Newtopia, alongside Park Jung-min. Announced by South Korea’s Coupang Play, the series will hit screens in 2025. Set in a zombie infested Seoul, the show stars Jisoo as Young Joo, the girlfriend of Park Jung-min’s character, Jae Yoon, who is serving his mandatory military service. The show will explore their struggle to find each other during the chaotic outbreak. Directed by Yoon Sung-hyun, Newtopia marks Yoon’s first drama and his third project with Park Jung-min, who also starred in Bleak Night and Time to Hunt.
For Jisoo, who began her music career in 2016, the series marks her second Kdrama, as she previously appeared in JTBC’s Snowdrop in 2021. The streaming service recently dropped the first look of both the actors. Park Jung-min is seen in his military uniform, looking frightened alongside a fellow soldier.
Meanwhile, Jisoo, dressed in a red top, is shown wandering the streets with a look of confusion on her face. Sharing the pictures, the service wrote, “On the day we broke up, zombies took over the world. Next-generation K-zombie casting, Soldier Park Jung-min X Girlfriend Jisoo. Scheduled to premiere on Coupang Play in 2025.”
Adapted from Han Sang Woon’s novel, Influenza, Newtopia also features Kim Joon Han alongside Jisoo and Park Jung-min. The drama takes place inside a military base, it follows Jae Yoon and his girlfriend Young Joo, who break up just before the zombie apocalypse begins. However, the former couple gets separated within the military base and both will be shown fighting zombies on their own, while also desperately trying to find each other again.
The production of Newtopia has already wrapped up. Meanwhile, the drama has been co-written by Han Jin-won, who also co-wrote the Oscar winning film Parasite, directed by Bong Jo-hoon. Ji Ho-jin, known for writing the Disney Plus series A Shop for Killers, also contributed to the script.
Other than her role in Newtopia, Jisoo is preparing for BLACKPINK’s tour later this year. The group renewed their contract with YG Entertainment last year, but Lisa is keeping herself busy, after she established her own label, while Jisoo, Jennie and Rose are busy with their own solo projects.
