Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla have maintained a close friendship over the years, supporting each other through many challenges. During the tragic period when Juhi lost her mother, Shah Rukh stood by her side. In a past interview, Juhi described this time as “horrific” but credited Shah Rukh for ensuring she was never alone and for lifting her spirits.
In a conversation with Rajeev Masand, Juhi mentioned that alongside her husband Jay Mehta, Shah Rukh was a constant presence during her difficult time. Her mother passed away in Prague while they were filming “Duplicate.” Juhi remembered being utterly devastated and immersing herself in work to cope.
“Shah Rukh was with me when we were there. And I remember just being totally devastated. And to try and forget about it, I would just jump into work so that… And Shah Rukh would try and make us all laugh, like he always does, he does it to everybody and he would just make sure that I was around and he’d keep it all happy and stuff and that’s how I got by,” she shared.
In another interview, Juhi revealed that Shah Rukh understood the pain of losing a parent, having experienced it himself. She told Hindustan Times, “He was the one who consoled me. He knew the pain of losing a parent and tried to make me laugh and forget the sorrow.” Juhi resumed work after a period of mourning, and her next two films, “Duplicate” and “Yes Boss,” were with Shah Rukh. She looked forward to being on set with him, finding comfort and distraction in his presence during that difficult time.
Juhi also shared that the tragic incident occurred just a day after they arrived in Prague. She and her mother had bought a gift for Karan Johar’s birthday, but the next morning, her mother went for a walk and never returned. Juhi described the experience as extremely traumatic, recounting how they brought her mother back in a coffin just three days later.
“Duplicate” was produced by Dharma Productions and directed by Mahesh Bhatt.
