Actor Anupam Kher recently met up with his Saransh director, Mahesh Bhatt, to chat about the film’s 19th anniversary. Saransh was Kher’s first film, and he has often told stories about how Bhatt almost replaced him in it. During their chat, organised for Anupam’s Actor Prepares students, Mahesh Bhatt shared a story about seeing yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna at a party and what happened next. The filmmaker mentioned that he made sure Anupam Kher came with him to Bollywood parties so that industry people would notice him.
Bhatt recalled in Hindi, “I used to make him tag along with me. There was a big stylist in our industry, who had a house in Pali Hill. And they’d host parties for stars there. I was invited to one of those parties, and those days, I’d go wherever free alcohol would take me. I asked Anupam to come along. He brought his brother along as well. I introduced him to everybody, and we went and took seats in the balcony.”
Mahesh Bhatt also recalled a time when, at a party, Rajesh Khanna walked in with his girlfriend and Anupam started to stand up to give up his seat, but the filmmaker told him to sit back down. “Rajesh Khanna, the legendary star, walked in with his girlfriend. He had such a charisma about him. Anupam took one look at him and started to get up from his seat. And I commanded him to sit right back down. ‘Sit down!’ I said. He understood why I told him to sit down. I didn’t tell him to sit down to throw attitude. There were so many empty seats, why was he offering his? I saw a large-hearted man in him, but he had an inferiority complex,” he said.
