Shobhaa De Lashes Out At Mohanlal For AMMA Resignation Amid Malayalam MeToo: 'Stand Up, Be A Man'
Shobhaa De called the Malayalam superstar's decision a 'well calculated' move and urged everyone to speak up against those who have been accused of sexual harassment.

Author and columnist Shobhaa De has lashed out at Mohanlala for resigning from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) amid the ongoing Malayalam MeToo movement. Recently, De spoke to a news portal when she questioned Mohanlal’s decision and called it a ‘cowardly act’.

“Stand up, be a man, tell your other team members to take responsibility and help those who are at the receiving end,” she told NDTV.

“The tragedy in this particular case is that for nearly five years the Justice Hema report had been lying there, nothing had been done. There was a breakaway group started by some women in the Malayalam film industry who were completely disheartened by the pathetic working conditions, and it was a cosy men’s club controlled by 15-20 men, who had absolutely power over their working and personal life,” Shobhaa De added.

The author further expressed that Mohanlal’s decision to resign from AMMA was not helpful. “The way this industry works is it’s a patriarchal system in its nastiest, most toxic form. Women seem to be completely voiceless and powerless. So things must be changed. I’m extremely, in a way, disheartened, shocked that the all-powerful executive committee headed by Mohanlal was to resign en masse. How does it help?” she said.

For the unversed, Mohanlal resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists earlier this week. The actor announced his decision and left everyone shocked. He was the president of the association and had a 17-member executive committee. However, all the members of the committee submitted their joint resignation. Their decision came amid the shocking allegations by a series of actresses accusing sexual misconduct by male industry members after the details of Justice Hema Committee report were made public.
